Grinnell College Humanities and Social Sciences Complex

The Grinnell College Humanities and Social Studies Complex provides 200,000 square-feet of classrooms, labs, research space and faculty offices joined by a central atrium. The atrium showcases the historic ARH tower. Waldinger’s mechanical system here includes a geothermal chiller, 676 chilled beams, over 1,200 lineal feet of architectural radiators, demand control ventilation, and an atrium smoke evacuation system. Our rainwater reclamation system collects water from roof drains and recycles it for irrigation and flushing toilets, minimizing the buildings impact on the municipal storm sewer system. We used prefabricated piping racks on this project to minimize our footprint on the jobsite as well as to compress the overall project schedule. These racks ranged from four pipes at 20 feet long to 18 pipes at 40 feet long and weighing 15,000 pounds.
